What is Shamanism?
Shamanism is the oldest form of spirituality on the planet. Shamanic tools which are 40,000 to 50,000 years old have been found in caves on Earth. It is practiced much the same all over the planet, and has been practiced the same way for all these tens of thousands of years! In the shamanic cosmology, there is a lower world where the power animals live. There is a middle world, where we live, which includes past, present and future. And there is an upper world in which there are white clouds on the ground, crystal- looking buildings, and teachers/people. One may "journey" in the shamanic way to any of these worlds by first going to the lower world and receiving guidance and direction from his/her power animal. What is in each of these worlds?
Lower World:
This is a magical realm where the power animals are located. It looks very like a rain forest, with plants and trees towering above, giving it a lush, dark green, wet look. In this place trees and animals can talk. Animals that ordinarily cannot sing, swim, fly, etc. can do so at will. They can change colors, sprout wings, sit on couches in smoking jackets, or what ever that want to do. They can give us valuable information. And they can take us to the middle world or the upper world if we ask. Why would we ask them to take us there? What is there that should interest us?
Middle World:
The middle world is where we live day to day. If you need to do" remote viewing", to see another location for any reason, a middle world journey would be in order. If you need to talk to someone about what is really going on with them, this would be the time for a middle world journey. Of course, you must ask that person’s permission to speak with them once you reach them in the middle world journey. If they deny permission, then you may not speak with them. If they do speak, many times they will let you know things in this way that they are too afraid or shy to say otherwise. It can be very enlightening to any relationship to have this kind of honest spirit-level conversation with someone. Another reason to take a middle world journey might be to check on loved ones far away to determine if they are safe. One might want to take a middle world journey to the future for some reason. A middle world journey can also be used for healing purposes. It is also possible to go to the past in a middle world journey.
Upper World:
The upper world is where those humans who have "passed over" to the other side are located. This also is where our teachers, guides, angels, all the spiritual masters are found. With the assistance of the power animal one can go visit and speak with any spiritual master, loved one, etc. in the upper world. It is a very powerful experience, to visit these entities. Any time one is not satisfied with answers given by the power animal it is possible to request a trip to the upper world for answers from teachers or guides, etc.
Shamanic Training:
Lois J. Wetzel will teach you how to safely do a shamanic journey. There are rules for safely doing this kind of spiritual work, and she will teach these procedures. You will be given ample opportunities to practice in the class, and share experiences with your classmates. A power animal will be retrieved for you so that you may journey. The power animal chooses you, by the way, based on qualities which it has that you need. You do not choose the power animal. You will learn how to retrieve power animals for others. The ability to visualize is very helpful in doing a shamanic journey. Lois has tapes available for practicing guided visual journeys before taking the class, should you need them.
Lois was trained in shamanism by Sandra Ingerman, author of "Soul Retrieval" and Educational Director of the Foundation for Shamanic Studies which was created by the anthropologist Michael Harner, author of "Way of the Shaman." Lois has been practicing shamanism for over fiftreen years, and also does soul retrievals. She learned the soul retrieval technique from Sandra Ingerman as well.
The cost of class includes a drumming CD to take home so you can do shamanic journeys on your own after you leave the class. The class lasts four to five hours.
What to bring: Something to take notes with and a pillow and a blanket, and a snack.. A drum, rattles, feather fan, crystals or any other shamanic tool which you feel inclined to bring are also welcome.
