In 2003 an infra-red photography project of the Universe revealed that our solar system (the sun and its planets) is becoming part of the Milky Way Galaxy, but came originally from a galaxy called Sagittarius Red Dwarf. That galaxy is not in the human visible range, but the Milky Way is, so until scientists saw the infra-red photographs we did not know, at least modern man did not know. The following is from a website called viewzone.com. I think the use of words like "cannibalism", "consuming" and "bully" are ridiculous anthropomorphizing of the cosmos, but if you can ignore those words, this is interesting information:
"Using volumes of data from the Two-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), a major project to survey the sky in infrared light led by the University of Massachusetts, astronomers are answering questions that have baffled scientists for decades and proving that our own Milky Way is consuming one of its neighbors in a dramatic display of ongoing galactic cannibalism. The study published in the Astrophysical Journal, is the first to map the full extent of the Sagittarius galaxy and show in visually vivid detail how its debris wraps around and passes through our Milky Way. Sagittarius is 10,000 times smaller in mass than the Milky Way, so it is getting stretched out, torn apart and gobbled up by the bigger Milky Way.
A new infra red digital survey of the entire sky was made in 2003. Teams from the universities of Virginia and Massachusetts used a supercomputer to sort through half a billion stars to create a -- NEW STAR MAP showing our Solar System (yellow circle) to be at the exact nexus crossroads where two galaxies are actually joining.
"It's clear who's the bully in the interaction," said Steven Majewski, U.Va. professor of astronomy and lead author on the paper describing the results.
"If people had infrared-sensitive eyes, the entrails of Sagittarius would be a prominent fixture sweeping across our sky," Majewski said. "But at human, visual wavelengths, they become buried among countless intervening stars and obscuring dust. The great expanse of the Sagittarius system has been hidden from view."
Not any more. By using infrared maps, the astronomers filtered away millions of foreground stars to focus on a type of star called an M giant. These large, infrared-bright stars are populous in the Sagittarius galaxy but uncommon in the outer Milky Way. The 2MASS infrared map of M giant stars analyzed by Majewski and collaborators is the first to give a complete view of the Milky Way galaxy's meal of Sagittarius stars, now wrapping like a spaghetti noodle around the Milky Way. Prior to this work, astronomers had detected only a few scattered pieces of the disrupted Sagittarius dwarf. Even the existence of Sagittarius was unknown until the heart of this nearest satellite galaxy of the Milky Way was discovered by a British team of astronomers in 1994.

The fact that the Milky Way is seen in the sky at an angle has always puzzled astronomers. If we originated from the Milky Way, we ought to be oriented to the galaxy's ecliptic, with the planets aligned around our Sun in much the same angle as our Sun aligns with the Milky Way. Instead, as first suggested by researcher Matthew Perkins Erwin, the odd angle suggests that our Sun is influenced by some other system. Together with data from the Two-Micron All Sky Survey we now know what it is. We actually belong to the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy.
"We sifted several thousand interesting stars from a catalog of half a billion," said co-author Michael Skrutskie, U.Va. professor of astronomy and principal investigator for the 2MASS project. "By tuning our maps of the sky to the 'right' kind of star, the Sagittarius system jumped into view."
We are from another galaxy in the process of joining with the Milky Way. The Milky Way is actually not our parent galaxy. The mystery of why the Milky Way has always been sideways in the night sky has never been answered -- until now.

Originally, I received the above information from Kathleen Gresham. Thanks, Kathleen! She asked me what I thought about all of this, what the metaphysical implications might be, and also if perhaps it meant that some of the old prophecies were now untrue. Here is my answer to her, expanded a little bit.
"I have been thinking and meditating on this merging of galaxies. My answer is not metaphysical as probably expected, because it seems to me that this whole subject is about the merging of science and spirit. As long as they are divorced or split up, we are not whole.
First, the Milky Way is not sideways or at an angle, I mean, what? at an angle to the "void" of space? Instead, it is we who are at an angle to the Milky Way, since we are sliding into that galaxy. I am pretty sure the Milky Way is right where it is supposed to be.
Next, let me say that the Mayan calendar is clearly aware of our position inside the Milky Way at 27 degrees of Sagittarius (The Cosmic Galactic Center) in December, 2012. This is called the precession. Just because human scientists of today just discovered that we were moving from one galaxy to another, does not mean that the process just started. It must have started a very, very long time ago. The Mayan calendar refers to the precession point, which is about the fact that the center of the Milky Way will be exactly lined up over a particular pyramid in Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico, on that day. This is when we humans become aware of who we are in such a way that time no longer has relevance for us, hence, the references to the end of time. Our moving into this galaxy is almost complete. The light is different as we are fully settling in here, which is why we are having to change our frequencies.
In 1952 the tomb of the Mayan prophet, Pacal Votan, was opened in Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico, and this new information eventually sent author Jose Arguelles on a quest to uncover more hidden knowledge. The Mayan glyphs were finally decoded, so we could read and better understand the calendar and the signs that the Ancient Mayans, possibly informed by extra-planetary beings, had left for us.
Arguelles discovered that we were moving into a new era signalled by the end of the Mayan calendar. He also learned we were behind schedule with our development, yet we could tip the balance and humankind could survive, if we got 144,000 people together with the intention to move into the light and the higher vibration during the Harmonic Convergence on August 16, 17, l987. I took my two sons, then 8 and 11 and we drove from our home in Galveston to Enchanted Rock, near Fredericksburg, Texas, where there were hundreds and hundreds of others meditating and praying (positive prayers, not negative pleas), with news helicopters circling overhead and news camera crews on the ground. Lightworkers did the job, and we actually got more than 144,000 to do this work with us at different locations over the globe.
Some prophets of old (Nostradamus, John of the Bible's "Revelations", Edgar Cayce) apparently saw a different time line, which all of us who do readings know means the outcome that was the most likely at the time that they did their readings. There are multiple parallel universes, and decisions we collectively make can change which universe we are in. We can change our future by our actions, and humankind, specifically Lightworkers, have done that; we are still doing that. These last five years are critical, and it is important that we all have joy in our hearts in vibrant expectation of the delightful future that awaits us as homo luminous - we are becoming multidimensional Lightbeings!
As we enter this new frequency of energy, it is important to know that the Earth is part of us. Listen to this! The root or first chakra of the Earth is at Lhasa, Tibet, the second chakra of the earth is at Giza, Egypt, the third chakra is at Stonehenge, UK, the fourth is at Machu Picchu, Peru, the fifth is downtown Los Angeles, California, USA, the sixth is at Osaka, Japan, and the seventh, the crown chakra, the connection to the Divine, is the Christ Consciousness of the Human Mind! (or our Buddha Mind, etc.)
There will be dates coming when we will be asked to do positive prayers, meditate or sing, projecting our joy into the earth. It is important to hold the positive vision, no matter how things temporarily look as the frequency of the planet and life on the planet shifts. We can all help in this positive shift, and we are all needed, since we are all part of the ONE, the All-That-Is. Time is speeding up as we approach fully entering the new reality, and it is not going to be always comfortable. But we are in the birth canal, so to speak. We are in the birth canal NOW.
We are all needed in this work. Positive mind sets are essential. Since we are the crown chakra, what you are thinking is very important. What your consciousness ingests is also important. All of us must participate in this awakening! Everything we do right now matters. Everything.
